Netscape Navigator from Netscape communications is basically a
Web browser. It also includes an e-mail client . The software gets installed as default browser for MacOS 8.
With MacOS 8.1 it is Internet Explorer and you have to install
Netscape Navigator separately.
Netscape has released newer versions called Communicator. You can download
it from the Netscape site. It is also available on lots of CD
ROMs that are included with magazines. Here we are focusing on
Navigator. If you are upgrading from Navigator, your preferences
will automatically be read into the newer versions. In effect
even this guide is sufficient for the upgaders. As the number
of Communicator users is very less as of now we will wait till
such time and update this site accordingly.
Netscape Navigator did not properly respond to Internet Config.
You can always try it once. If it works great, its nice and you
will not have to bother yourself. If it does not work properly
then do these settings as explained below.
Communicator is completely compatible with Internet config, so
take the benefit.
-
Open Netscape Navigator by double clicking on its icon. It should
be present in your Internet Applications folder inside Internet
folder on your hard disk. An alias could also be there depending
that you have not removed it.
-
From the Edit menu go to the preference and go to the Servers tab. Here fill in the SMTP server and the POP server address
like bom1.vsnl.net.in. Next fill in your login name (Username) in the POP userID like
abcd.
-
The Identity tab as you guessed is to set your personal identity. You have
to fill in your name, e-mail address which is like abcd@bom1.vsnl.net.in and your organization name.
- When you receive mail by clicking on the Get Mail button or on
the Icon (it looks like an envelop) at the bottom left corner of the window
you will get a dialogue box asking you to enter your password.
You type in the pass word and Navigator will connect to the VSNL
mail server and download the mails. Every time you receive mail
after launching Navigator you will be prompted for the password.
You can by pass this by going to the preferences and clicking
on the Remember my password check button. See this image.
That is all that is required to do in Netscape Navigator. You
can set other preferences according to your own needs.
Here are some tips that you could use.
-
When writing mail, in the message body if you type any web address
like http://www. apple.com, you will create a hyperlink in the message. The receiver can
then click on the link to go to the designated site. Also you
can use mailto:person@company.com to create hyperlink for mailing.
-
The messages that you receive, you can click and hold down the
mouse to add the sender to your address book.
- To send an attachment ( a file which you had previously created
using some other application) click on the Attach button on the
write mail window. It is a good way of sending small graphics
or photographs and also documents or worksheets.
Experiment with Navigator e-mail and you will discover a lot of
new things. It is very stable.
