Changing Your Password

One of the often asked questions TCP/IP account users of VSNL have is:
`How do I change my password.' You may want to change your password
for more security, a temporary shared account, or for whatever reason.
For whatever reason you may have, the directions here will work.
The process of changing your password for a TCP/IP user is almost
identical to that a Shell account user uses.
Windows 95:
- Click on Start - Run
- Type in: telnet hostname.vsnl.net.in
(eg. telnet giasbm01.vsnl.net.in )
- You will get a `login: ' prompt.
Enter your username and password
Sample:
Digital UNIX (giasbm01.vsnl.net.in) (ttyp4)
login: rajm
Password:
[...]
You have new mail.
YOUR USAGE TIME IN HOURS OUT OF 500 HOURS
-----------------------------------------
REMAINING HOURS= 35.02
EXPIRY DATE = 2.1.1999
usage between last two updates=1997 seconds
Usage is updated once a day.
Last updated on 04-11-98 at 03:22 hrs
You are requested to change your password regularly.
Password should be a combination of characters and
numerics to avoid any guessing.
Press to continue.
Press <Enter> to continue.

- Hit the `Enter' key as it requests
- Next, the `Main Menu' will appear. See the screenshot.
- Type: 7 and hit the `Enter' key.
- You will be prompted with:
Old password: Type in your
current password you use to login to your account. Note that it
says `Old', but that's assuming your current is old and the password
you want to change to is the `new'. Also note that
when you type it, it will not show - this is for security reasons, so
just type carefully.
- New password: will appear. Type in the new
password you wish to set with this account.
- Re-enter new password: will appear. Type in your
new password again. You are requested twice to ensure that
you typed the same thing twice and didn't make any mistakes on either
try.
- You should get something similar to: `Password changed'.
Hit enter to return to the `Main menu'
- Type 0 (zero) to exit out of this `telnet session'
- That's it.
