Slow downloads? Put your modem connection on steroids!:

Is your brand new 56k modem downloading at 1.8 Kbps while your neighbour's is downloading at 5 Kbps? Well, it may not just the quality of telephone lines. Blame it on Microsoft for the slow speed. They have put a huge speed breaker on the so-called "Information Superhighway".

28.8 and 33.6 K modems should ideally achieve transfer rates of around 3 Kbps and 56K modems around 5 Kbps. Unfortunately, many Internet users never seem to cross the 2 Kbps barrier. Even with a 33.6 modem, I, too, was downloading at 0.8 Kbps just a week back. Downloads used to take ages! Recently, I found software called called FileHound, which brought up my download speeds up to 1.5 Kbps, but this was still 50% less than what I ought to have been getting. So I hunted around the web and hung around in chat rooms and discussion forums until I hit upon a term called MTU. So searching I went on the Net to find out and this is what I came across and changed my life for ever. Now I rarely download at speeds less than 3 Kbps even during prime times and my telephone bill got slashed into half. The World Wide Wait was finally over.

You can check if you want to use this tip or not. Both the browser you are using and System Monitor display the your current data transfer rate. Check them to make sure they are 10% of each other. If they are not, then you certainly can get a boost with this tip.
