Browser Basics II: Managing Browser's Cache

While you browse the Web, your browser is working in the background, keeping track of the sites you've visited, and even saving images from these pages on your hard disk so they'll load faster when you return. The saved files are collectively referred to as your disk cache. Loading a file from the disk cache is a lot faster than loading it from the Internet, so every time you visit a site, your browser checks the cache to see if any of the files needed are already there.

To empty your disk cache:

After you've spent a lot of time online, your disk cache can become cluttered with dozens of files that you no longer need. If space on your hard disk is at a premium, you may want to occasionally delete these files or limit the space allotted to them.

  1. On the Edit menu, click Preferences.
  2. In the window which opens up, click on the Advanced.
  3. Then click on Cache.
  4. Then click the "Clear the Disk Cache" button.
To change the size of your disk cache:
  1. On the Edit menu, click Preferences.
  2. In the window which opens up, click on the Advanced.
  3. Then click on Cache.
  4. Then in the box in front of Disk Cache fill in the size of Cache you want to have in Kilo Bytes of Disk space. The default set by the browser is 5000 KB.
