Understanding and Using Newsgroups
Posting a message to a newsgroup
by Peter Doshi
There are two forms of posting. One is posting a reply to an article, much
the same way as you reply to an email. The other is composing a post. In
other words, creating a thread, which means you start a new message, rather
than replying to a message started by somebody else.
Posting a reply
Once you have found a message you would like to reply to, click the Reply
button and select Reply to Group, if prompted.
The "Message Composition" window will come up where you can
compose your Usenet post. Yes, it works exactly like email! The only
difference is who the your message is being sent to. In
this case, it's the nj.forsale
newsgroup.
When you're done writing your email, check it over. If you're sure that
you're ready for millions of people around the world to see it, click
Send. This is not meant to scare you; news is a public medium, and that
should not be forgotten.
News propagates from your local server (where your message was delivered to)
to that server's peers, and slowly creeps its way around the globe. Within
hours, somebody in the most remote part of the world may be reading your
message... and who knows, they might even reply to your post!
