Understanding and Using Newsgroups
Reading messages in a Newsgroup
by Peter Doshi
Most people spend their time using Usenet to read messages. Occasionally,
they might post, but the bulk of time is usually spent on reading Usenet
posts. This section deals with
how you can read these messages.
Open up a particular newsgroup
- Click the Windows Start button.
Choose Programs | Netscape... | Netscape Collabra
-
Click the little plus symbol next to news.vsnl.net.in
(The name of your news server)
or next to news depending on your setup. It should
cause it to expand and show the contents which, hopefully,
should be the newsgroups you have subscribed to.
- Double-click the newsgroup you'd like to see.
- That newsgroup should open up and you can start
reading the messages in it.
View a threaded discussion
By default, Netscape will thread
the messages it receives. That means that the original post and other people's
replies to that post will go under the same tree, making it easy to follow a
discussion. Click on the little plus symbol next to the article to see
replies to that particular post.
That's really all there is to reading. Reading is the easy part.
Posting articles is the next step in making
your voice heard by everyone.
